Emmaus Homes Saint Charles, MO

I saw the few stories you had posted about the Emmaus home in St. Charles. Well I worked at the one in Marthasville, Mo which is the oldest campus of the two. I worked there for 4 years and experienced a few things first hand. I also want to add, I am not easily scared and if I had it my way, I would love to be a Ghost Hunter.

The seminary was in operation at this site until 1883, when it moved to St. Louis and eventually became Eden Seminary. In 1893 the campus in Marthasville became known the Emmaus Asylum for Epileptics and Feeble Minded. The campus grew to a total of eight substantial buildings including a chapel, by 1928. This is an important historic site, having been constructed by some of the tens of thousands of Germans who emigrated here beginning in the 1830s.

Emmaus Home

I have worked the Emmaus in St. Charles and the stories the other people have written are true and it is true that the upstairs of the main building is a very creepy place. I have been up there and you just know there is something there. At Emmaus, an individual’s spiritual life is an important part of one’s journey to fulfillment and independence. Emmaus takes pride in our faith-based heritage, and strives to help each of our clients participate in the faith community of their choice. By giving to Emmaus, you are making a difference that will increase independence, inclusion, and self-advocacy in the lives of adults with developmental disabilities.

It is a place like no other, and it made a believer out of me. Emmaus Homes is a 5013 non-profit organization and United Way agency. Since our founding in 1893, we have been providing around-the-clock support services to people with cognitive or developmental disabilities. Today, Emmaus supports nearly 300 individuals in more than 80 community homes in a four-county region within the St. Louis metropolitan area. Episode #1 Marthasville had a horrible snow storm. My boss and I didn't want to try and go home since the roads down there are country roads and are very twisty.

Checking if the site connection is secure

This house is closed off, with all the suspicion locked inside. I was in there one time, and it is definitely creepy. It is very old, and you can just feel the thickness in the air, and a strong presence all around you. There are stories of course, and I am very skeptical of ghost stories, but it did not take any convincing that I was in a place full of something I could not explain. I was glad to get the chance to see the building, but I have no want or need to go back. I respect the people who may roam this campus that I do not see, because I can feel them here.

I just thought I was going crazy until the next round of bed checks and they were open again. This time when I closed them, I yelled "Stop opening the doors. This is getting quite irritating." It didn't happen again on the next check. In St. Charles there is an OLD OLD OLD place called, Emmaus Homes on Randolph St.. My mother works there and she has worked there for over 20 years. She tells me that some of the building is shut down due to a few ghost walking around. My mother has told me that when you drive by late at night when no one is there you can see in the attic lights flashing on and off.

Emmaus

There was a man who rented an apartment up on the upper floor of the Mens building. My boss asked me if I would work part of the night shift with her since the night shift worker was going to be late. On this floor were mentally and physically handicapped men. They were profoundly handicapped which means, they cannot do anything for themselves.

Also the Marthasville campus opened in 1893 with both men and women residents, while St. Charles campus was all women until the late 70’s when they began accepting men. Helping People

I had worked on the first floor for quite awhile. This building had no air conditioning so our windows were always open. The maintenance men used the basement for the storage of lawn mowers and things like that. One night, I kept smelling a very strong odor of gasoline.

With the help of over 700 team members, Emmaus provides housing, recreational, education and spiritual care programs for those we serve. With Emmaus standing behind them, and the support of the community, Emmaus clients can be in control of their lives and live like you and me. The Emmaus Home Complex in Marthasville began as a seminary for the German Evangelical Church in Missouri. A campus of five buildings was completed here by 1859. Four of these remain in various states of repair, those being the Farm House, Bake Oven, Friedensbote Publishing House, and the Dormitory. The College Building itself was lost to a fire in 1930.

The buildings in the complex are unique in that they are of sturdy limestone construction in varying German styles by German immigrants. They are representative of the tenacity of some of Missouri’s earliest Germans, and are unique in that most are original with very few modifications over the years. Emmaus has listed the campus for sale and it is hoped that listing on the Places in Peril will bring it to the attention of a preservation-minded developer. I am an employee of Emmaus for almost 2 yrs now. I have seen and heard things on several occasions. The old white house that has been closed for some time now is the one that gives me the chills.
